[This letter is
written on two pages torn out of Kasumi's journal, each page
with text front and reverse. Her apkallu lettering is absurdly
rounded and cutesy, difficult to read for anyone unfamiliar with
her hand. The envelope is marked for Widpool and bears the name
of the intended recipients - Kuroihire Kenta and Kuroihire
Kaori. It arrives alongside 100 gold and a bulging, uneven
package haphazardly bound with cheap brown paper and twine.] Dear mom and dad, I'm sorry it's taken so long to send you a note! I'm not dead, just super busy. How are both of you? Anything interesting happening at home? Did mom find any cool junk on the beach lately? Have you heard from Rumi? You probably already know we didn't leave on the best terms, but I still hope he's doing OK. It's the 13th of Middle Las as I write this from my cozy lodgings, a couple of cute stone cottages blanketed in moss. I'm staying here with my new friends. It's incredible to think I've been away from home for more than a month now! I promised I would write when I arrived in Keltokel. Instead, I'm penning this letter just before I leave again. In truth, I've only been here since the 2nd of Middle Las. Taking the caravan from Vlaytok, I was supposed to arrive in Keltokel around the 14th or 15th of Early Las. There was a problem during our journey and we were stranded in a small remote village for a while, about one week. A nice Hemet and her two granddaughters took care of us and let us stay in their temple. It was a lot of time to get to know my companions. There were three other people who received the same letter I did, all with their own reasons for wanting to meet with the Marchioness. There's a pretty human woman with some unusual dark magic, she can be fussy but she's saved our skins a bunch of times. There's also a male tylwyth, a well-spoken and kind-hearted guy who knows his way around a spear. Finally, there was is a female tylwyth too, a Neath acolyte and super powerful mage. She has a strong presence and it feels like she keeps many secrets, but she can be really funny too. At first I wondered if the tylwyth were related (is that a rude thing to assume?) but they quickly dispelled any such notion! We spent the week cleaning some rats out of a mill, helping woodsmen perform a ritual and recovering some food and supplies from the larder in a nearby keep. Some ozrut living in the area also came to speak to us. They saw what we were up to around the village and wanted us to take their leader's sick kid with us to Keltokel for treatment. Her step-mother came with us too. She's become one of my closest friends so far. (There is so much more to this story, I'll tell you one day in person) Around the 24th of Early Las we departed for Keltokel on foot. The Hemet's granddaughters came with us, they were going to the temples in Keltokel to further their education. With eight of us for protection and company and a pack horse to cart our stuff, the walk wasn't as brutal as my hike from Widpool to Vlaytok, but the nights were still bitter and cruel! Ever since I arrived in Keltokel things have been crazy busy! I've been touring the city, meeting all sorts of new people and performing almost every night. The highlight so far has been performing to an absolutely enormous crowd on the main stage at the Festival of Apsu. I wish I could say I won the competition, but I still placed second. It was a life-changing experience. I have sent some of the winnings. I'm sorry I couldn't send more, it looks like I'll still be traveling for a while. I've also sent home an interesting piece I found while diving in the ruins of Old Yaskel. I think mom can use her tools to remove the barnacles, if she thinks it's a worthwhile project. I'll be leaving tomorrow and heading back toward the village. The young ozrut is healthy and ready to go home, and the Hemet will be pleased to know that her granddaughters have joined a temple and are progressing well. I don't know when I will return to Keltokel exactly, but I expect it'll be around the start of Late Las. If you are able to write back, please use the address enclosed. I'll be coming back here, so I'll have the groundskeeper receive mail for me. I'm having fun, but I miss you both terribly. I hope you're happy and healthy and having as much fun as I am! Lots and lots and lots and lots of love, Kuroihire Kasumi xoxo |
